Every one knows that one should use protection while climbing (i.e. a rope, harness, and some way to connect yourself to the rock to arrest your fall). But some decide to forgo those safety measures. Some times very experienced climbers will neglect safety precaustions and climb a route without any safety. Whether that is due to arrogance or the need to experience something more from climbing is hard to say. Regardless the people participating in free solo climbing are putting themselves as close to death as they possibly can. Many climbers who free solo die while climbing. Below is a link to one such story of an experienced climber who died while free solo climbing. The climber, Brad Parker, had been climbing for many years. He had climbed some very difficult routes and was even featured on the cover of California Climber magazine. Hours before his last ascent he had proposed to his girlfriend. This story is an absolute tragedy. This story is a prime example of why safety procaustions should be taken climbing and highlights the dangers and consequences of free solo climbing.
